Getting the right fitting clothes is one of the most important things you can do for your style. It doesn’t matter how much, or how little you spend on your clothes, if the fit is off, you won’t look your best.

Here are some things to look out for when buying clothes and how to make sure fit your body just right and make you look and feel great.

Button-down shirts

Slim fit shirts are a blessing for some of us, and a curse for others. You’ve probably seen a few men wear a shirt that’s just a little bit too tight, just because it’s slim fit.

It’s hard especially if you have the superman shape to get a good fitting shirt. So slim is usually the way to go. However, if your shirt starts to pull on either side of your chest when you sit down, it’s probably a little too small for you.

Either go one size up or opt for the same shirt without the slim fit style. If you do have the time and money to spend, go a little larger in the style and get it tailored to your body.

Check if it fits without trying it on

There’s a quick hack to guessing if your trousers will fit. This is helpful when you’re running late for something or the line for the dressing room is too damn long.

This test works for the average body, however, if you’re overweight then proportions are going to be a little different. It’s still worth a shot though.

Grab the trousers with one hand and make a fist with the other. Place your arm inside the trouser waist so that the elbow and fist are holding them like a hanger.

Put down those saggy trousers

No matter what your trouser style or body shape, saggy trousers are not attractive. If they are way too saggy then give those bad boys to charity, if they are only slightly bigger then opt for a belt with small incremental holes.

There are a few belts that are micro-adjustable, so you can make the most of your saggy trousers or if you’ve lost or put on a little weight.

Suit jacket shoulders

Obviously, the best way to rock a suit jacket is by getting it tailored. If you don’t have time or money for that, then use these rules to make sure at the very least the shoulders fit correctly.

If you want to know if the suit fits you right from the shoulders, put the suit on, find a flat wall, and lean up against it.

If the suit shoulders hit the wall first, and then crumble, that suit’s too big for you. You’re going to have to downsize.

On the other hand, if the bulge of your shoulder hits the wall first before the shoulder pad does, the suit shoulders are too small for you. This means you need to go a size bigger.

You want both the shoulder pad and your shoulder to simultaneously hit the wall with no crumbling. Once you get that right, you’ll know the fit through the shoulder is correct, and the rest of the jacket will look great.

Losen that collar

A snug neckline looks really tidy and smart when you’re wearing a shirt. Sometimes, it can be a little too snug. An easy way to decide if the shirt is the best fit is to use the finger test.

Simply button your shirt up all the way, take your index finger and you should be able to slide it in comfortably in the neckline. It shouldn’t be tight and there shouldn’t be any pulling. If you can’t slide a finger in, it’s too tight for you. If you can slide a whole fist in, it’s too big for you.

Ass to grass

An easy way to test if your jeans fit properly is to drop into a squat while wearing them. You can do this one while trying the trousers on in the fitting room.

You need to make sure that the jeans aren’t cutting your circulation or your range of motion. You should be able to do a squat in your jeans.

If you can barely squat without the jeans feeling like they’re about to tear or the pants start sliding down below your waist, chances are they’re too tight and the rise is too short. You’re gonna need to go one size up.
