Expect the signature soaring harmonies, analog synths, indie-rocking guitars, and obligatory blips and bleeps from this Harlem Boys Choir alumnus. Ever the multi-tasker, GV has produced every track, sang every vocal nuance, and played every instrument, except for a Vernon Reid (of the legendary Living Colour) guitar solo on a track called “New Number Old Trick.
When he wasn’t busy collaborating with Chiddy Bang, The Morning Benders, and Das Racist, or sharing bills with Theophilus London, Marina & The Diamonds, and Bear Hands, Gordon also found time to record a mixtape of non-album tracks and remixes. Sporting provocative song titles like “MalcolmXXXMclaren,” “ID-EGO-SUPEREGO,” and “Black on Black Murder,” the free MalcomXMclaren mixtape aims to be an eclectic blend of No Wave, Electro-Funk, Disco, Rap, and Post-Punk. GV will unleash the project on December 1st. Here is a sneak peak of the track, “MalcomXXXMcLaren,” which Voidwell says “is meant to suggest a possibility for more hybridized art that speaks multiple languages and narratives at once.” But mostly, it’s just super dance-y.

Voidwell also whipped up this viral video companion piece, which he explains “employs hip-hop sampling/remixing practices and William S. Burroughs’ cut-up and fold-in method made famous in Naked Lunch.”

Since dropping his Voided Checks Mixtape for free in late 2009, GordonVoidwell has quickly been garnering acclaim for both his own material as well as the tracks he’s crafted for others. Gordon has also won the adorations of everyone from indie darlings BRAHMS(who remixed Voidwell’s “Ivy League Circus”) to pop music masterminds like Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson(who declared “I love this shit. I play it on my radio show, in my house AND in my sets.”) Mayer Hawthorne, another fan, even invited Gordon to open his tour last Fall along with The Heavy.
