An image from Hailee Steinfeld’s Miu Miu campaign has been removed over safety concerns.
The picture – taken by fashion photographer and film-maker Bruce Weber and showing the 14-year-old actress sitting on a train track while wiping away a tear – has been blasted by the Advertising Standards Authority as “irresponsible” because it depicts a child in an unsafe location.
However, Prada Retail UK – which owns the Miu Miu brand – has defended the shot claiming it was “part of a serious, high-fashion campaign” and “based on the set of an imaginary film”.
Prada added it was clear that Hailee “could have easily moved from where she was sitting because she was not restrained in any way”, but the ASA ruled that the railway setting was “irresponsible” considering her age.
Hailee has previously spoken about how thrilled she was to be chosen for the campaign.
She said: “Just going from not that long ago, when I was doing the press for ‘True Grit’ and the awards circuit and learning about the different designers and getting to wear them, and having Miu Miu be one of the ones I loved – then having something the campaign come along was really huge for me.
“It’s been wonderful. It has been so much fun. I have had such a blast getting to know everyone that works with the brand.”
