This week saw the emergence of brand new material from the elusive Archy Marshall – formerly known as Zoo Kid, now known as King Krule – in the form of the beautifully forlorn “The Noose of Jah City”. Taken from his forthcoming self-titled EP, released November 7 on True Panther Sounds, it fleshes out the stark heartache of his debut single “Out Getting Ribs”, creating in the process one of Marshall’s most fully realised songs to date. But make no mistake – even though shuffling beats and shimmering keys now surround him, Marshall is still raging inside, declaring himself as being “suffocated in concrete”.
Since its debut on Tuesday, the track has received high acclaim from all quarters, with the song already receiving several plays on Radio 1 and XFM from the likes of Zane Lowe and Mary Anne Hobbs, as well as spreading like wildfire on the internet, with the biggest blogs in both the UK (Guardian, Abeano, Dummy) and the US (Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear, Fader, Stereogum) all championing the this major new talent on their homepages, with King Krule peaking as Hype Machine’s 6th most popular artist of the week as a result (which considering Soundcloud’s 24-hour crash the day it premiered is pretty staggering).
King Krule will also be embarking on debut tours of the US in October and the UK in November, offering audiences a rare opportunity to see Marshall play live.
