6 years ago a young man named Wasalu Muhammad Jaco (AKA Lupe Fiasco) hit the music scene by storm with his skating hip-hop anthem ‘Kick, Push‘. This tune was everywhere and around about the time when skateboarding was absolutely everywhere. Tony Hawk was probably to blame for the commercialism of the sport, but that’s another story…
Lupe Fiasco stuck around for a little while with his award winning album Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor with big names such as The Neptunes, Kanye West, Mike Shinoda, Craig Kallman, Prolyfic, Needlz, Soundtrakk, and Brandon Howard featuring on the album – since that very album, Lupe seems to have dropped off the map. So could 2012 be his year to shine again?
The American rapper is back with a new album titled Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Part 1 scheduled for release at the end of September.
The first video to emerge from the highly anticipated album is for ‘Around My Way [Freedom Ain’t Free]‘ and it sets in stone what’s to come for the talented rapper.
Lupe seems like he is on top of the world in this video. Although there seems to be something wrong with his eyes? He pimps around the streets in a Lamborghini wearing shades and buying what the kids call “bling”. He spits on the record with feeling and clearly makes a point about money in his lyrics. In the end, his point is made by throwing the keys to the Lamborghini back to the car rental worker. Could this be an ironic piece to literally say “Hey look, I’m skint now and I need to make another record to pay for everything” – or is he trying to make a meal out of all the expensive, over-the-top Hip-Hop music videos out there. Sit tight and watch to make your mind up for yourself.
This is a great return for Lupe Fiasco and gives us a hint as to what direction he is headed in with his upcoming material. Watch the video for Around My Way [Freedom Ain’t Free]‘ below.
The video is directed by Alex Nazari. Lupe Fiasco‘s Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Part 1 will be available September 25, 2012.
