The Luyas Hit The Road, Share Two Videos And Short Film.

Dead Oceans are proud to announce that The Luyas will embark on a European tour next month (dates below), including a London show at Café Oto on October 10 with Sub Pop recording artists Still Corners. Released earlier this year, the Montreal quartet’s Too Beautiful To Work album has yielded two striking promo clips, for the title track and "Tiny Head", both directed by Derrick Belcham.

Last October, The Luyas put together a multi-media experience at Pop Montreal. They transformed the space at Red Bird studios using lighting and sculpture into an entirely new psychedelic world to house their performance. Takeaway Show’s Vincent Moon and A Story Told Well’s Derrick Belcham captured the event for a film titled “Everything Is Outta Sight”.

The Luyas are Jessie Stein, Mathieu Charbonneau, Pietro Amatro and Stefan Schneider. They recorded Too Beautiful To Work at 6 Nassau in Toronto, Ontario, and call Montreal, Quebec home. They play instruments like French horn and keys, guitars and drums. Jessie does the singing. She also plays the Moodswinger: a 12-string electric zither with an additional third bridge designed by Dutch experimental luthier Yuri Landman. The rod that functions as the third bridge divides the strings into two sections to cause an overtone multiphonic sound.

A picture-perfect collection of echo-drenched space-age pop songs, Too Beautiful To Work buzzes and pops into retro-futurist sonic bliss. From the vintage effects crackling throughout "Tiny Head" to the cerebral repetition found on the title track, The Luyas’ smart, heady pop sounds vital and modern, yet utterly timeless. The band also knows how to write the perfect hook ("Cold Canada"), pairing it with the more cinematic and atmospheric ("Spherical Mattress," "Worth Mentioning," "What Mercy Is,") side of their elaborate vision.
