On Thursday, June 29, 2017 in the Blue Room at Third Man Records. poet Abraham Smith read his soon-to-be published book Destruction of Man (Third Man Books, 2018) in its entirety. Third Man filmed the three hour long epic performance in front of a live audience. Afterward, Nashville author Betsy Phillips (Jesus Crawdad Death) described the reading:
“That was so amazing. I don’t even know what to think of it yet. I feel like I’m going to have to think about it for a thousand years, but it just felt so generous and cool and like we were seeing something people just don’t get to see. I felt like I was seeing a man at the far side of the English language, pushing out farther. It was like standing in a hose of words. And watching just how physically draining it was on him… I don’t know. It was just extraordinary.”
Abe was soaked in sweat at the end of the reading. He had gone the distance, and the audience had gone with him. Ask anyone who was there, the experience was transformative.
