Alaina Castillo – just a boy. An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.
“Since I can’t say stuff to people’s faces, might as well sing it.” So says the somewhat introverted Alaina Castillo. A self-professed shy girl, the Houston-raised, LA-based singer-songwriter is one of those performers who’s much more comfortable entertaining people in front of a camera than she is making small talk face to face. Vlogging and singing covers in ASMR on YouTube was the longtime Elvis fan’s original outlet. A few of those covers, like her spin on Billie Eilish’s “lovely” say, now boast millions of views. Singing comes naturally to Castillo, who’s been sharpening her skills since youth church choir days back in Texas. While in college, she began writing songs from her own perspective, penning lyrics in both Spanish and English. 2019’s ‘antisocial butterfly’ was her proper debut EP, a collection of bilingual bops that quickly garnered some buzz. “Just A Boy” dropped a year later and immediately took off, positioning the girl with the dyed locks as an artist with a future. In May, her debut album arrived – well, the first half it, at least. Like a diary, ‘parallel universe pt 1’ contains intimate odes to weed, romance, and personal wellbeing. Spacey and sensual, ‘pocket locket’ is one of ’em, and it sounded great in our DSCVR studio. “just a boy” did too. Prepare to be captivated.
