Dan D’Lion has today unveiled new single ‘Need You Right Now’, which features Channel Tres and is available today via Insanity Records.
This follows the multi-hyphenated artist, producer and songwriter’s acclaimed 2020 mixtape ‘When One Thing Leads To Another’, and latest track ‘Apple Juice’ (featuring French dance legend Feder).
‘Need You Right Now further introduces Dan D’Lion’s upcoming, collaboration-focused project, which will follow later this year.
‘Need You Right Now’ perfectly pairs Dan D’Lion’s emotive, electronic R&B with a head-turning appearance from Compton-born prodigy Channel Tres (who has recently collaborated with the likes of Tyler, The Creator, SG Lewis and Robyn).
Thematically, it explores Dan’s desire for connection in typically candid form, but as heightened by the enforced isolation of recent months. “It’s been a mad year without the ones we love. I wanted to write something that said exactly how much I need that intimacy in my life. I’m also a big fan of everything Tres…so getting Channel on this track was a dream!”
Listen to Dan D’Lion ‘Need You Right Now’:
Dan D’Lion’s eclectic, futuristic sound found its escapist origins in his hometown of Reading. Born to a jazz drummer dad and a record collection full of soul from his mum, Dan grew up encouraged “to make as much of a racket as I could” (he also naturally gravitated towards the local legacy of rock, and idolised Rage Against The Machine) Skipping university to move to London and pursue a career in music.
Dan D’Lion has since honed a visionary musical imagination; surging between Neptunes-worthy, pitch-shifted pop, sinuous R&B, and glittering, Jai Paul-esque funk.
There is, too, more than Dan D’Lion than meets the eye. As evidenced in his choice of pseudonym, Dan’s work often explores the relationship between emotional vulnerability and strength, particularly in the context of modern masculinity.
Working multiple jobs to make ends meet, his own struggle to blend into the crowd found a cathartic outlet in early tracks like ‘Simmer Down’, which was written in response to being mugged (and a more generational sense of anger, fear, and paranoia).
Last year’s mixtape ‘When One Thing Leads To Another’ proved a vivid soundtrack about what you learn about yourself, as you navigate a new relationship. His upcoming, collaboration-focused EP continues that process of letting others in, and opening up…
Off-kilter, colourful and deeply accomplished, Dan D’Lion is one of UK pop’s modern outliers – and increasingly, international names (from Channel Tres to Feder, and more to follow) are starting to take notice.
Despite the isolation at the heart of ‘Need You Right Now’ (and the last twelve months), Dan D’Lion’s idiosyncratic world appears to be getting bigger, and better.
Dan D’Lion new EP is coming soon via Insanity Records / Sony Music.
