FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HAPPY SAD

“Requiem for Dead Flowers”

A Post-Classical Reflection on Time and Memory

Epictronic is pleased to announce the release of the official video for “Requiem
for Dead Flowers,” a new track by ambient/folk artist Happy Sad, taken from the
album The World Is Grand When We See.

“Requiem for Dead Flowers” reflects on the way seasons fade. As nature moves on,
so do the emotional imprints tied to it. The piece draws a parallel between withering
flowers and the soft erosion of memory, presenting a restrained and reflective soundscape.
Built on subtle orchestration and minimal textures, the composition moves with patience
and intent.

Happy Sad describes the track as part of a post-classical lineage shaped by artists
such as Jóhann Jóhannsson and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Watch the video here:

About the Artist: The Architect of Sound

Happy Sad is the solo project of Hiroaki, a Japanese artist and sound professional
based in the game industry. He began making music during his student years, playing
café bar gigs and recording demos. His influences take in soul, British rock, folk,
trip hop, neoclassical, world music, and film scores, alongside a strong connection
to literature. His recordings balance live instrumentation with programmed elements.
To date, Happy Sad has released seven albums and 19 EPs.

Outside of music, Hiroaki has around 14 years of experience as a Sound Designer
and Sound Director in the games industry, having contributed to over 60 projects
at companies including NetEase Games, FunPlus, NHN PlayArt, and Noisycroak Inc.
His work spans music composition, sound design, audio direction, and promotional
video production. In 2013, his track “Everyday” won the domestic DJ category and
reached the finals of MTV and Lenovo’s CO:LAB contest.

In recent years, Hiroaki has travelled across ten countries in search of sounds
and traditional instruments. Encounters along the way with displaced communities
have shaped his approach to music as a form of shared human expression.

The World Is Grand When We See is out now via Epictronic.

Discrepancy and Essentiality.

Happy Sad means cherishing once-in-a-lifetime encounters and moments amidst diverse
cultures and temperaments.

There is determination and conviction there.

Hiroaki Kusano is embarking on another journey.

○Ichiro Ebisu

(Sound Designer)

This best-of album, which can be called the culmination of Happy Sad’s work, is
truly a “must-listen.”

Just by listening to the music, vivid images appear before your eyes, and you feel
as if you are traveling the world. >From instrumentals to vocal tracks, each song
has a different worldview, yet they are all wonderfully brought together as “the
world of Happy Sad.”

Happy Sad’s music, infused with a variety of sounds, is a testament to his sound
design background. Each listen offers a new discovery, making it truly enjoyable.
The exquisite sound, blending the pleasant feel of live instrumentation with a touch
of melancholy and wistfulness, is a must-listen for fans and newcomers alike.

○Atsuhiro Ishizuna

(Sound Designer, Composer)

As both a guitarist and vocalist, his unwavering commitment to his own unique style
while traversing a wide range of genres deserves respect. The meticulous scene-defining
and construction skills honed as a game creator are evident throughout his music.
This depth is the true essence of this work.

As an aside, the contrast between the delicate and sincere worldview of his music
and his surprisingly lighthearted personality in person is quite fascinating. The
fact that someone who creates such profound music is actually such a lighthearted
character makes him an even more appealing artist.

“Lily (2026mix)” is particularly exceptional. The powerful portrayal of moving forward
towards the future while grappling with separation is inspiring every time I listen
to it.

Happy Sad as an artist, and Happy Sad as a creator—both sides of him are vividly
imprinted in this album, making it a truly worthwhile listen. I highly recommend
immersing yourself in every detail of the sound.

○Noboru Mutoh

(Music Producer / Sound Designer)

This album is filled with his life and philosophy on music.

(CG Artist)

As a friend who has listened to Happy Sad’s music for a long time, “The World is
Grand When We See” is a very moving work for me.

Early Happy Sad possessed the raw energy and passion of a rock band. Since then,
through travel and experience in game sound design, his music has continuously evolved,
incorporating diverse influences. This evolution is clearly evident in this album.
While expanding his expression into folk, ambient, and post-classical styles, each
element remains distinctly Happy Sad, surprising even to long-time listeners.

Furthermore, this album includes numerous 2026 mixes of past tracks. As a long-time
listener, this was particularly interesting. Familiar songs reveal new facets through
Kusano’s current sensibilities. While there are discoveries like, “I never imagined
this song would be reborn like this,” there’s a sense of nostalgia without it feeling
dated; rather, it resonates freshly within the current atmosphere.

This flexibility and his constant pursuit of updating his musicality reflect Kusano’s
continued dedication to new forms of expression.

However, these changes were not a shift in direction, but rather a process of delving
deeper into the theme characteristic of Hiroaki Kusano: “painting memorable landscapes
through sound.”

And ‘The World is Grand When We See’ is a work born from that journey. The scenery,
atmosphere, and lives of the people encountered during his travels in Dubai, Turkey,
Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Greece, and other places quietly blend together,
and it feels as if Happy Sad’s music up to that point has culminated in a single
landscape.

As the title suggests, the world is vast. But that vastness can only be truly felt
when you actually walk through it and see it with your own eyes. This album reminds
us of that obvious yet important truth without being preachy.

This is an album that lets us feel the landscapes Kusano has seen, the flow of time
he encountered there, and the richness of a world we still don’t know.

○ExNECol

(Audio Director)

If I had to describe him in one word, it would be “eternal challenger.”

He incorporates new cultural and musical elements from both within Japan and abroad,
but these are based on his own experiences.

Beyond simple composition, he has a deep commitment to the instruments he uses,
directly purchasing instruments from different cultures and incorporating them into
his music.

The tour announcement arrives on the heels of the highly anticipated release of
xperiment, Ken Carson’s fifth studio album, which debuted with nearly 16 million
global opening-day streams, marking the sixth-biggest opening-day debut for a rap
album this year. Built on his signature high-energy sound, the project marks a creative
evolution, seamlessly blending explosive production with more melodic, emotionally
driven moments while continuing to push the boundaries of his artistry. The album
features production from Ken’s trusted collaborators AM, F1LTHY, Lucian, Clif Shayne,
and more, alongside 2hollis, who produced “shadeson,” the track Ken performed as
the closing song during his explosive headline set at Rolling Loud California 2026.

xperiment reflects an evolution in his career and a continued push to expand creative
boundaries. It features collaborations with Destroy Lonely on “shopping,” Lil Uzi
Vert on “ghost,” Young Thug on “drug kit,” and Playboi Carti on “deaf note,” in
addition to “wedidit,” which Ken and Carti performed together during Carti’s closing
set at Summer Smash. The track’s official music video, filmed in their hometown

In addition to the album, Ken further expanded the ever-evolving world of xperiment.
The album artwork, featuring a USB drive inserted into his neck, serves as the central
visual motif for the era. Extending the concept beyond the music, xperiment unfolds
through a series of cinematic short films that deepen its eerie universe, leaning
into sci-fi, suspense, and surreal storytelling. Directed by Joy Divizn, the visual
series brings the album’s immersive world to life. Watch now: Episode 1, Episode
2, Episode 3, Episode 4, Episode 5, Episode 6.

Ken also announced cartunez, his upcoming mixtape arriving Friday, July 11, which
he has been previewing across social media. Ahead of the release, he shared the
xperiment digital album yesterday, featuring the exclusive bonus track “Too Many
Poles,” available now for digital download HERE.

This chapter builds on an unprecedented run for the Atlanta native. His 2025 album,
More Chaos, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, earning him his first chart-topping
album, while 2023’s critically acclaimed A Great Chaos propelled his career to new
heights, landing on year-end Best Albums lists from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and
Complex. This year alone, Ken has continued to raise the bar. He was announced as
a headliner for ComplexCon 2026 as part of Opium’s takeover of the festival’s 10th
anniversary celebration in Los Angeles, where he will headline on Saturday, October
3. In June, he delivered a career-defining performance at Rolling Loud California
2026, closing the Under Armour Stage with his first-ever Sunday night headlining
festival set. As Billboard wrote, “Carson delivered the kind of set that felt bigger
than just another festival performance.”

Last week, Ken kicked off his international festival run with appearances at Roskilde
Festival in Denmark and Splash! Festival in Germany, debuting new tracks from xperiment
live and bringing out Destroy Lonely for “shopping.” This week, he takes the stage
at Openair Frauenfeld in Switzerland, followed by Clout Festival in Poland. He will
close out his international run next month at Frequency Festival in Austria.

Beyond the stage, Ken has continued to expand his cultural footprint through sold-
out touring and fashion collaborations, including his sold-out “WTF” headline tour
across Europe and the UK, Playboi Carti’s “Antagonist 2.0 Tour,” and collaborations
with Affliction, SKIMS x Cactus Plant Flea Market, and Jesse Jo Stark’s Deadly Doll
line.

## LITTLE KING Shares New Single “Opus Perficit” To Kick Off July West Coast Tour!

- Link: https://digitalwarble.com/2026/07/little-king-shares-new-single-opus-perficit-to-kick-off-july-west-coast-tour/

Arizona’s Little King shares “Opus Perficit,” a haunting new standalone single that
reveals a quieter, more introspective side of the progressive rock band as they
celebrate 30 years of making music. Released just days before the group hits the
road for a nine‑date Southwest and West Coast tour, the track offers a striking
contrast to their heavier catalog while remaining unmistakably Little King, thoughtful,
adventurous, and emotionally resonant.
Built around a hypnotic 5/4 pulse, “Opus
Perficit” unfolds with slow‑burn intensity, pairing acoustic textures, layered vocals,
and cinematic dynamics. Lyrically, songwriter Ryan Rosoff explores the creative
obsession that drives artists forward, the tension between endless revision and
completion, and the vulnerability of releasing one’s work into the world. References
to “Osmium” and “20 Hz” nod to Rosoff’s long‑running lyrical universe, offering
longtime fans a deeper thread to pull. The recording features David Hamilton in
a remarkable multi‑instrumental performance, providing both the expressive piano
and melodic bass work that anchor the song’s emotional depth. Rather than relying
on technical excess, “Opus Perficit” embraces space, restraint, and atmosphere,
allowing every note to serve the story. The single arrives in tandem with Little
King’s nine‑date Southwest tour, marking the band’s second major run since releasing
their 2025 album “Lente Viviente.” The trio Ryan Rosoff (guitar/vocals), Tony Bojorquez(
drums), and Dave Hamilton (bass) will perform across key West Coast cities, bringing
their acclaimed live energy back to the stage.Earlier this year, Little King completed
a successful string of shows across New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and even a surprise
pop‑up performance in Mexico. Their full tour diary, including stories of power
outages, ibuprofen, and gratitude, is available on their website.Rosoff describes
Little King’s live show as “meticulous, rehearsed, and RAGING with push‑and‑pull
energy… PROS with experience.” Fans can expect high‑level musicianship, dynamic
setlists, and a performance that’s both technically sharp and emotionally charged.
Released in September 2025, “Lente Viviente” represents a major creative leap for
Little King. With Bojorquez and Hamilton joining the lineup, the band crafted what
Rosoff calls “BY FAR our biggest release.” The album’s title, Spanish for Living
Lens, ties into Rosoff’s video memoir company, LivingLens Memoirs, and sets the
thematic tone for the record’s exploration of memory, identity, perception, and
the shifting filters through which we understand ourselves.Across tightly constructed“
micro‑epics,” the album moves through themes of childhood and enduring friendship(“
Catch and Release,” “Dawn Villa”), immigration and identity (“Who’s Illegal?”),
aging and addiction (“Pass Through Filters”), and the balance between strength and
vulnerability (“Kindness for Weakness”). Musically, the record blends progressive
rock, hard rock, and melodic hooks with Little King’s trademark precision and dynamic
push‑and‑pull. For three decades, Little King has carved out a unique space in progressive
rock, dynamic, melodic, and fiercely independent. Led by songwriter‑guitarist Ryan
Rosoff, the band continues to evolve while maintaining the emotional honesty and
musical precision that define their sound. With “Opus Perficit,” Little King opens
a new chapter, one that honors the past, embraces the present, and hints at the
creative horizons still ahead.

“Overall, this band showcased a sophisticated sense of melodies that were not overly
complicated, but easy to assimilate as well. Not being familiar with them, I am
surprised to learn of their longevity, and you wouldn’t know this was their eight
album, because the drive and fire in them is very much alive in their music. 8/10”–
Metal Temple
”Little King maintain high intensity from start to finish, achieving
a rare balance between complexity and immediacy. Each track has its own identity
and emotional range, and the musicianship and production are consistently top-tier.
According to Rocky, Lente Viviente is essential listening for prog and heavy-rock
fans who miss the spirit of Saga, Rush, and King’s X.” – Metalized”Seven songs,
clocking in at just over twenty-five minutes Little King pack a powerful and melodic
cocktail of prog, rock and alternative. If Rush jammed with REM and King’s X it
would sound a little like this. Impressive.” – Get Ready To Rock!”Little King
hasn’t just released an album; they’ve crafted an immersive, emotional journey that
rewards every listen.” – Jace Media Music”Long-running Progressive Rock outfit
Little King is unveiling “Dawn Villa,” the second single from their highly anticipated
eighth studio album, Lente Viviente! A sonic time capsule wrapped in staccato riffs
and melodic crescendos, “Dawn Villa” is a heartfelt tribute to frontman Ryan Rosoff’s
formative years in Mercer Island, Washington. The track comes from their eighth
album Lente Viviente, which is available for pre-order/digital pre-save now at the
links below, and releases September 26th, 2025. If you grew up obsessed with the
classic seventies prog rock greats like Rush, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd, with
a modern flare for drama such as Muse or Neal Morse, Little King deserves your attention!”–
Ghost Cult Magazine”The album reflects a stylistic maturity that has strengthened
over time and a layering of ideas that have, on this occasion, found a stable place.
The project’s artistic perspective rests on very solid technical foundations and
a strong will to celebrate the traditional principles of classic rock, while also
flirting with progressive elements and ultimately making the most of a decidedly
pronounced melodic inclination. An absolutely original point of view that has given
rise to an elegant and refined sound, capable of effectively combining electric
jolts and delicate harmonies in the spirit of a truly contagious passion.” – Rock
Hard Italy”Over nearly three decades, Little King has evolved from the El Paso
roots of “Transmountain” to the intricate, personal soundscapes of “Lente Viviente,”
blending complex arrangements, strong melodies, and lyrical depth.” – Progressive
Rock Journal”Lente Viviente is as striking as it is arousing and easy to suggest
a must for all rock appetites. LITTLE KING seem to know how to feed every instinct
and want with their eclectic enterprise and at the same time spring something strikingly
new, the proof all there in Lente Viviente.” – The Ringmaster Review”Tucson progressive
rockers’ Little King are gearing up for the release of their 8th studio album, ‘
Lente Viviente’ on Sept. 26th and have also just dropped their first single from
the album, ‘Catch and Release’. This band truly pushes boundaries and yet makes
modern prog rock very accessible. That is a difficult feat and a challenge many
bands can’t overcome. But these fellas make it sound very simple, even though the
music is quite complex. Similar to YES in that every instrument, including the vocals,
all seem to be doing their own thing…but somehow it all works beautifully, and that
is what good prog is about. Listen up for Little King on your Home for the Best
New Rock… W-J-O-EEEE” – WJOE – Findlay’s Home for Rock & Roll””Lente Viviente”
is a great release, very short of course, but still atmospheric and moving. Overriding
the higher-faster-further mentality in such a playful way deserves respect, and
the men deserve it again with their eighth appearance overall.8/10″ – PowerMetal.

Bondo shares new single/music video, “Zuma,” ahead of self-titled LP

Today Bondo shares “Zuma,” their third and final single from their forthcoming self-
titled third LP (due July 31 on Solid Brass), along with a music video directed
by Robbie Corral. The band has also been tapped to support WU LYF on West Coast
dates, beginning July 25 with a hometown show in LA at the Lodge Room that is already
sold out.

---

Los Angeles band Bondo balances force & restraint. Their music is world-building
in a science fiction sort of way. The four-piece has honed their own type of post-
rock/slowcore, built upon a strong foundation of live dynamics and a proprietary
instrumental language. Their sound is narrative-like: a dream logic which is both
intuitive and natural.

Start Track music blog says, “Bondo’s whole sound-world is foggy and deliberately
obfuscatory. Music like this could easily disappear into the background – it’s not
clamouring for attention. But put the headphones in, close the door, close your
eyes, and listen. It’s worth taking a little time to let it all sink in.”

Aquarium Drunkard called Bondo, “…a four-piece riffing on a vibe something like
Spiderland floating in a quarry with Fugazi’s latter-era instrumental explorations.”

Their most recent album finds Bondo once again playing live in the studio, combing
through songs they know well with sincerity. While continuity persists throughout
their 11-track offering, the band demonstrates a range of songwriting styles. Some
tracks are more traditional, featuring verses and choruses that are easy to latch
onto. Others rely on their signature instrumental sound, building subtle structures
while still allowing room for meditations that ultimately dissolve into space.

Some days the album feels like it’s always been there humming in the background,
nostalgic and warm. Other days there’s a new sound or a good note that leaves you
wondering why you never noticed it before.

Bondo recently teamed up with LA-based Solid Brass Records for the release of their
3rd studio album, Bondo, which releases on 7/31/26 and will be available digitally
and on classic black vinyl.

About Ho99o9

The New Jersey-bred outfit Ho99o9 made its way to Los Angeles over a decade ago.
Surging and seething just below the surface, the pair broke through as an apocalyptically
fascinating outlier with their 2017 full-length debut, United States of Horror.
In the meantime, their infamous live shows became the stuff of legend as they packed
houses on their own and shared stages with everyone from Slipknot, Korn, Alice in
Chains, Rob Zombie, Ministry, and The Dillinger Escape Plan to Lil Uzi Vert, Denzel
Curry, Cypress Hill, and Ghostface Killah. Earning the respect of an elite cohort
of peers, popular collaborations placed them toe-to-toe with Corey Taylor of Slipknot,
The Prodigy, JPEGMAFIA, Ghostemane, HEALTH, 3TEETH, and N8NOFACE, among others.
Jack Black made an appearance in their KULT CABLE series while they guested on The
Eric Andre Show. They’ve received further acclaim from The New York Times, NME,
The Guardian, Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, The FADER, Revolver, and more. They stand
out as the rare phenomenon that can decimate Hellfest and Aftershock Festival and
captivate on A COLORS SHOW. Tomorrow We Escape, Ho99o9’s third album, was released
recently via 999 Deathkult / Last Gang. A true amalgamation of all the band’s influences—
experimental hip-hop, digital hardcore, future-facing punk, metal, jarring industrial,
and off-kilter electronics—the album is their most emotional offering to date, rooted
in personal struggle and triumph.

First Artist Ever To Earn Three RIAA Diamond Song Awards

WASHINGTON – The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today announced
that Katy Perry’s iconic song “Roar” (Capitol Records) has earned a Diamond certification
surpassing the 10-million threshold counting song sales and streams in the United
States. With the new certification of “Roar,” which follows previously Diamond-certified
songs “Dark Horse” and “Firework,” Katy becomes the first artist in RIAA Gold &
Platinum Program history to earn three RIAA Diamond Song Awards.

“Once again, Katy Perry has made history,” Cary Sherman, Chairman and CEO of the
RIAA. “We are thrilled to recognize Katy as the first artist to earn three Diamond
Song Awards. Katy has a singular track record of notable Gold & Platinum achievements,
and this triple Diamond milestone is now forever etched in our program’s history.
Only 14 songs have earned Diamond status to date, and Katy owns three of them —
what a remarkable achievement and testament to a groundbreaking artist.”

During the course of Katy’s career, 21 songs have achieved RIAA certification, and
three studio albums have also been certified Platinum or multi-Platinum. More information
on Katy’s career certifications can be found here.

Almost 60 years since its inception, the RIAA’s iconic Gold & Platinum brand is
the industry’s premier award for recognizing artistic achievement in the music marketplace.
Officially launched in 1958, the program expanded in 1999 to include a Diamond Award
honoring 10 million or more certifications of an album or song.

All RIAA certifications are calculated by Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman. Complete lists
of all album, single, and video awards, as well as top tallies for artists and albums

KATY PERRY ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF METAMORPHOSIS MUSIC, HER JOINT VENTURE RECORD LABEL
WITH CAPITOL RECORDS, AND FIRST SIGNING, FERRAS

METAMORPHOSIS MUSIC/CAPITOL RECORDS RELEASES FERRAS’ SELF-TITLED EP DIGITALLY TODAY

NEW ARTIST FERRAS JOINS KATY FOR NORTH AMERICAN LEG OF HER PRISMATIC WORLD TOUR
BEGINNING JUNE 22ND

June 17th, 2014 — Hollywood, CA — Global superstar Katy Perry has announced the
launch of Metamorphosis Music, her new joint venture record label with Capitol Records.
Her first signing is multi-dimensional pop singer Ferras, whose self-titled EP for
Metamorphosis Music/Capitol Records is released digitally today: http://smarturl.
it/FerrasEP

Katy and Ferras met in 2007 when both were newly signed artists to Capitol Records.
Through the years, their friendship developed, and when Katy was ready to launch
Metamorphosis Music, she knew the Jordan-born, L.A.-based singer, songwriter, and
musician should be her inaugural artist.

“Ferras is a man with a message, and a unique lyrical way of communicating his perspective
on life that makes you feel connected to every note when you listen. ‘Speak in Tongues’
is a song with raw emotional power that I wish I wrote. I believe he is going to
be an important artist to watch unfold. I am SO ecstatic the world gets to hear
his music now both online and on tour with me,” Katy says of Ferras.

Katy not only duets with Ferras on one song on the EP (the Greg Wells-produced “
Legends Never Die”), she also serves as its executive producer. “Her instincts are
really on point,” Ferras says. “She is very blunt and doesn’t sugar-coat things,
which I appreciate. Also, she gave me the freedom to do what I wanted musically
and was a natural partner.”

Ferras’ EP is a showcase for his lush, dark-hued pop aesthetic, sweeping soulful
vocals, and unapologetically honest lyricism. “I think of every song as having its
own world,” Ferras says of the EP’s sound. “I try not to categorize it; it’s a pop
record with many different textures, but it’s definitely dark in places.”

With lavish sonics courtesy of producers Greg Wells, A.C. and Billboard, Benny Cassette,
The Monsters and the Strangerz, and Jesse Shatkin, the EP finds Ferras, with his
main songwriting collaborator Sarah Hudson, scaling emotional highs and lows in
his lyrics. Lead-off track “Speak in Tongues” tells a story of being in a relationship“
where you lose the physical connection, creating an ocean of distance,” he explains.“
It’s about reigniting the spark and re-building intimacy rather than resentment.”

Ferras is also looking forward to hitting the road with Katy as an opener on the
entire North American leg of her Prismatic World Tour, which kicks off on June 22nd
in Raleigh, NC, and continues through mid-October. “Being on stage is pure bliss.
There’s no greater high than experiencing that exchange of energy,” Ferras says.“
I need that charge.”

The track-listing for Ferras’ self-titled EP is as follows:

“Speak in Tongues”

“No Good In Goodnight”

“Champagne”

“King Of Sabotage”

ABOUT SILK SONIC:

Silk Sonic introduced “Leave The Door Open” in March 2021 alongside an official
music video directed by Mars and Florent Déchard, which won Best R&B Video and Best
Editing at the 2021 MTV Music Video Awards. The track was followed by a hugely popular
social media campaign, #LetSilkSonicThrive, which earned them a debut live performance
at the GRAMMY® Awards (plus a powerful tribute to Little Richard) followed quickly
by iconic live sets at the iHeartRadio Music Awards and the BET Awards. “Leave The
Door Open” became Silk Sonic’s first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, spending
two non-consecutive weeks at #1 and 18 consecutive weeks in the top 10. In the meantime,
their infectious jingle co-written and performed for SelvaRey Rum amassed widescale
praise over the summer. The duo then coasted into their sophomore release of “Skate,”
which saw them glide into a second top 10 hit on Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs
as it debuted at #4 and began as the genre’s best-selling song of the week. “Smokin
Out The Window” later arrived with Billboard noting how “Anderson .Paak and Bruno
Mars take it all the way back to the 1970s Soul Train era in the retro video. [It]
finds them going through their choreo on an old school TV set while rocking wide
lapel tuxedo jackets.” An Evening With Silk Sonic is out now.

---

To date, if you wanted to learn about DOMi & JD BECK—the internet’s most hyped jazz
duo—you had to visit their website, click a rat playing saxophone, and read a story
about a 12-year-old physicist (DOMi Louna) and a 6-year-old sheep investigator (
JD Beck). Let’s fix that. “My philosophy of life is don’t take shit too seriously,”
says DOMi Louna, born Domitille Degalle. And that’s fair. But the vibrant world
she and her collaborator have given us demands exploration.

They reveal a bit more on their Instagram profiles, via clips of their jams, with
JD on a simple drum kit and DOMi Louna on MIDI keys. She favors sounds that evoke‘
70s jazz fusion and the colorful blips of 2000s Pokémon soundtracks, while he tunes
and plays his snare in ways that can sound electronic, channeling IDM and boom bap.
Sometimes they’re stuffed into a bathroom and sometimes the drums are muffled by
pretzels stacked on the hi-hat, or toilet paper tossed on the snare. Their music
finds both humor and greatness in harmonic complexity and rhythmic shiftiness, abruptly
adopting and ditching tempos, toying with time signatures, and sneaking extra beats
into bridges.

The collaboration began under silly circumstances. DOMi Louna was a teen protegé
at Berklee by way of the Paris Conservatory; JD, four years her junior, had gigged
since grade school around his hometown, Dallas—first in producer Jah-Born’s band
where he duetted with MPC beatmakers and DJs spinning Dilla. In 2018, they were
both invited to join an ensemble performing at the National Association of Music
Merchants (NAMM) trade show and played in a room full of blaring instrumental demos,
surrounded by a chaotic din. “It was so bad, we couldn’t hear anything,” JD laughs.
They bonded over gauche keyboard effects and mom jokes, and a more audible jam that
night sparked interest in working more.

Along the ride, DOMi & JD BECK have sat in with Herbie Hancock and backed Thundercat,
Ariana Grande, Mac DeMarco, Eric André, and more. They also co-wrote “Skate” on .
Paak’s GRAMMY-winning album with Bruno Mars as Silk Sonic. Neither can believe what’s
happening, but leave it to them to skewer the moment. When JD suggests people might
hate the new album, DOMi Louna says, “That would be sick! Booo. They suck!”
