BRAKHAGE
1955-1999 / sound & silent / 16mm / 88min trt
In the realm of experimental film, there is no name more iconic than Brakhage. During the second half of the 20th century, the visual kinetics of Stan Brakhage’s work came to represent the household understanding of avant garde cinema. And yet, though he’s often imitated, his films remain wholly unrivaled in their ability to anchor formal abstraction with personal biography and philosophical lyricism. This program, originally assembled in 2014 by Marilyn Brakhage and noted film preservationist Mark Toscano for the National Gallery of Art, spans 45 years of Brakhage’s filmic exploration. Combining canonized work with overlooked gems, and covering an array of his techniques in sound and silent filmmaking, this event promises revelations for both newcomers and longtime admirers of Stan Brakhage.
