Shaybo – Anger (Live) | Vevo DSCVR Artists to Watch 2021
Shaybo – Anger. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2021, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
Stand back a bit when Shaybo’s going off. With a mic in her hand, the UK sensation spits with a power that’s a little daunting – and that’s a good thing. Ferociousness is one of the attributes that has earned the South London rapper a recent groundswell of fans. Blistering tracks such as “Dobale,” “Anger” and “Daily Duppy” command your attention instantly. And Shaybo’s flow flies around those beats with a swooping authority. The self-proclaimed Queen of the South has a novel emergence story. Her Nigerian family moved to London when she was six. She started rapping in her early teens, when Nicki Minaj’s music provided an inspirational perspective that male MCs couldn’t. She learned to rap by battling all comers in the school yard. The focus that marks her current work is evident “Female Eruption,” which she made at 13, surrounded by a lady squad and riding a dancehall groove. She’s long deemed herself a tomboy from the hood, whose short fuse – whether with romance or societal woes – often got her in trouble. When her parents asked her to hit uni before carrying on with music, she studied social work, assisting survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire. But one way to push an agenda of equality is to inspire women to use their voices, and when music grabbed her in her third year, she left school and got back in the game. “I don’t want to glamorize confrontation or fighting,” she’s said, “but I do want to glamorize women sticking up for themselves.” Now tastemakers are shouting her out, Lily Allen and Katy B are texting and her ‘Queen of the South’ EP is almost here. Shaped by Ghanian producer Guiltybeatz, it shows Shaybo in a wider lens, tapping the brakes on drill beats, and stressing versatility. But don’t worry, the fierceness hasn’t vanished. The rat-a-tat cadence driving her ATW performances of “Daily Duppy” and “Dobale” is intense.
