New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission have approved the use of the Tesla Model 3 for its fleet of cars. 100% leather-free, including even the steering wheel, this will be the first electric car with vegan options approved for the fleet. This also includes being used for Uber and Lyft.
The city has already cut emissions and reducing air pollution through New York City Clean Air Taxi rules. This next step to start thinking about the harm caused by the components of a vehicle and aligns with Tesla’s mission statement “to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”
Animal agriculture, which includes the leather industry, is responsible for 14% – 18% of all greenhouse-gas emissions. That adds up the amount produced by the entire world’s transportation systems combined. So these small steps by some of the largest companies in the world like Tesla, of not using an animal product is good news for us all.
