Swedish indie-pop four-piece Tribe Friday release the single “Loosie” and announce the upcoming October 23rd release of Waiting For A Sign, their second EP release of 2020.
Fans who caught the band during their US + EU dates earlier this year will be immediately familiar with the 1-2 punch of “Julie” into “Loosie”. These two new tracks serving as the mainstay set-opener throughout; “Julie” with its hushed acoustic restrain setting up the driving hooks of “Loosie”.
For singer and songwriter, Noah Deutschmann, “Loosie” is a signifier of the band’s growth as songwriters and arrangers. While they had previously preferred to begin and finish new songs in short bursts of creativity, “Loosie” marked a change of attitude as it was developed over multiple sessions. At its heart, it’s still a slice of textbook Tribe Friday ragged indie pop, but its edges and undercurrents have been finessed in ways that previous cuts were not afforded. It’s also about an acid trip going terribly wrong. Noah says, “We snatched the name (Lucy – which is the name given to ‘the trip herself’ in the lyrics) off a quartet of British gentlemen you might’ve heard of. They were pretty big in the ’60s, or something.”
Despite being recorded in the same sessions as their Chasing Pictures EP (released March, 2020), there’s something about Waiting For A Sign that feels less like a continuation of that last release, and more like a marker of what’s to come next.
Whilst being unabashed guitar pop at heart, the songs on Waiting For A Sign are the boldest statements that the band have yet made. From the starkly-exposed acoustic opener “Julie”, through the band-favorite “Loosie”, the breakneck pace of “Cool Song”, to the bright “Sleepwalk”. All pointing in a direction that suggests that Tribe Friday are not so much waiting for a sign as confidently reaching for the next opportunity.
Fans can keep their eyes peeled later this year for a special vinyl pressing of both EPs in a combined package.
Tribe Friday are also thrilled to have been nominated as a Framtidens Artist (Artist Of The Future) by Swedish national radio station P3 earlier this year. This puts them in contention for an award at the prestigious P3 Guld (Gold) ceremony. Shortlist nominations will be announced later this year, prior to the January 2021 awards show. In advance of that, they will be performing at the P3 Älskar (P3 Loves) Karlstad show on November 5th. Details forthcoming.
Tribe Friday recently announced a run of socially-distanced September 2020 dates in Germany.
